Silver was born in Pennsylvania and educated at Haverford College (BA, 1990) and Emory University (Ph.D., 1997). She is currently Professor of English at Mercer University, and lives in Macon, Georgia with her husband and son.

On the topic of beauty, Silver has written that “When I see or hear something beautiful, I feel it in my body and breath. Beauty exists everywhere, including in the midst of great suffering and pain; perhaps that kind of beauty is the most potent of all.” Her work engages with the trauma of chronic and terminal illness, and with religious faith and mystery, storytelling, memory, and the risks and rewards of being human.

She serves on the board of the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation and is active in the cause of educating people about inflammatory breast and metastatic cancer.
