Born June 10, 1892, at Oberlin, Ohio.  Education:  Oberlin College, A.B., 1913; Harvard University, 1928–29, 1939–40; Cornell University, Ph.D., 1931.

Instructor in Botany, 1916–17, Cornell University; Member of the Biological Survey, 1917–18, 1919–20, Assistant Biologist, 1921–23, United States Department of Agriculture; Professor of Botany, 1923–29, Fukien Christian University; Research Fellow, 1928–29, China Medical Board of the Rockefeller Foundation; Assistant in the Herbarium, 1929–30, Arnold Arboretum; Professor of Botany and Curator of the Herbarium, 1931—, Lingnan University.
