Gunnar B. Bergman

Born in Sweden, Gunnar Bergman earned his undergraduate degree in chemical engineering at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (1947) and a Ph.D. in the same field at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena (1951). Subsequently he remained at CalTech as a Research Fellow (1951-52) and then Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering, working in the lab and classroom with Linus Pauling, among others. In 1961 he left CalTech to take up the position of Chief Scientist at the National Engineering Science Company, a military think tank, where he remained until joining the Western Offshore Drilling and Exploration Company in 1968 as Senior Vice President of Oceanography. Before his retirement he worked as a consultant and in 1976 cofounded SeaTek Corporation with the position of Vice President.

During his Fellowship term, Gunnar Bergman studied the structure of crystalline materials in the laboratory of U. Dehlinger at the Max Planck Institut für Metallforschung.
