Jill Hoffman

After receiving a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1974-75 on the heels of the publication of her first book of poems, Mink Coat (Holt, Rinehart & Winston, 1973),  Jill Hoffman began to write fiction, as well as poetry.  Her first novel, Jilted, was published by Simon & Schuster in 1993, and translated into Japanese.  Since then she has written two novels, in search of an agent, and publisher, and is the Founding Editor of Mudfish, a journal of art and poetry, and Mudfish Individual Poets Series.   Mudfish #16 and Mudfish Individual Poets series #6  are soon to go to press.  A second book of poems, Black Diaries, was published by Box Turtle Press in 2000. In addition, her poems have been published in The New Yorker and many other magazines.  

She has a B.A. from Bennington College, a M.A. from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University.  She has taught at Bard, Barnard, Columbia, Brooklyn College, the New School, and other academic institutions.  Presently she teaches poetry and fiction writing in her home in New York City.  She is also a figurative, expressionist painter in oils.
