Kurt Stallmann

Kurt Stallmann devotes his energy towards synthesizing many of the mediums available to composers today. His works include pieces for acoustic ensembles, acoustic/electronic groupings, environmental sounds, purely synthetic sounds, and multidisciplinary collaborations. Recognition of his work includes, in addition to his Guggenheim Fellowship, a 2009 Goddard Lieberson Award from The American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Recent premieres include Moon Crossings, a work commissioned by the Fromm Music Foundation for fifteen performers, video (by collaborator Alfred Guzzetti), and electronics (April 2011); and Following Franz, Now, a work commissioned by Chamber Music America for the Ensō String Quartet and electronics (March 2011). In 2008 and 2009, he served as Composer-in-Residence at Sharpstown High School for the Houston Symphony Education and Outreach Program as part of a national music education program sponsored by the FutureStage program of Fidelity Investments. Currently, he is composing a new electronic work to celebrate the unveiling of a new skyspace by artist James Turrell at Rice University (Winter 2011); and an interactive electronic work for virtuoso saxophonist Stephen Duke (Spring 2012). Stallmann serves as Associate Professor on the composition faculty at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music where he directs the electroacoustic music facility, REMLABS.
