Lukas Felzmann

Lukas Felzmann was born in Zürich in 1959, grew up and went to school in Switzerland. In 1981, he received a scholarship to study art and relocated to San Francisco, where he earned a Masters of Fine Arts from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Lukas Felzmann’s photographs examine the intersection of nature and culture. He is interested in the relationship of sculpture and photography and has worked with installations containing photographs, sculptural elements, projections and sound. He is also dedicated to producing handcrafted prints and has focused extensively on publishing conceptual photography books.

Lukas Felzmann has authored 6 books including Landfall in 2004, Waters in Between with John Berger in 2009, Swarm in 2011 and Gull Juju in 2015, all published by Lars Müller Publishers, Zürich. The artist’s most recent book is Apophenia, published by Buchhandlung Walther König, Cologne and Codax Publishers in 2018.

Lukas Felzmann has taught in the Department of Art and Art History at Stanford University for 25 years. His work has been shown in exhibitions in the USA, Switzerland, Germany, Egypt, Colombia and France. He is the recipient of two grants of the Federal Department of the Interior, Switzerland, two National Endowment for the Arts Grants, USA, an International Photobook Award from Kassel Germany, and the Best International Photobook of the Year Award from PhotoEspana, Spain.
