Mark I. Friedman is the Associate Director of the Philadelphia-based Monell Chemical Senses Center and the Chair of its Technology Transfer Program.  A leading researcher in the field of eating behavior, Mr. Friedman is interested in tracing how energy metabolism affects eating behavior, and the interactions of fats and carbohydrates in diet-induced obesity.  He has authored over 150 publications, among them "The physiological psychology of hunger: A physiological perspective" (written with E. M. Stricker), Psychological Review, 83 (1976), 409-431; "An energy sensor for control of energy intake," Proceedings of the Nutrition Society, 56 (1997), 41-50; and "Food intake: control, regulation and the illusion of dysregulation," in Appetite and Food Intake: Behavioral and Physiological Considerations, ed. R. Harris and R. Mattes (CRC Press, 2008).

After receiving his Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1973, Mr. Friedman spent two years as a National Institute of Mental Health Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, and 1975-76 as a Visiting Scientist at the Collège de France before joining the faculty of the University of Massachusetts as an Assistant (and, beginning in 1980, Associate) Professor of Biopsychology.  He moved to the Monell Center in 1982 as an Associate Member.  Mr. Friedman has also been a Fogarty Senior International Fellow in the Department of Physiology at St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London. He is a member of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behavior (SSIB) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).
