Pablo Leon Gerchunoff

Pablo Gerchunoff is a Professor and Researcher in the Department of Economics and History at the Universidad Torcuato Di Tella in Buenos Aires; from 1981 to 2000, he was a researcher at its Center for Economic Research. In addition, he has been an Independent Researcher for CONICET since 1985, and since 2000 a Professor of Political Economics at the University of Bologna at Buenos Aires. He has twice been the head of the advisory cabinet for Argentina’s Economic Ministry.

After receiving his Licendiado from the University of Buenos Aires in 1973, Mr. Gerchunoff  began his career as a researcher at the Centro de Estudios de Estado y Sociedad (CEDES), working there from 1975 till he moved to the Centro de Estudios e Investigaciones Laborales (CEIL) in 1977.  He has been a consultant for the Organización Internacional del Trabjo (1979-80) as well as for the World Bank (1990). In 2007, he was the Giner de los Ríos Fellow at the Universidad Alcalá de Henares in Spain.

He is the editor of Las privatizaciones en la Argentina  (Instituto Torcuato Di Tella and Ed. Tesis, 1993) and the sole or joint author of many articles and monographs, including, with Lucas Llach, Entre la equidad y el crecimiento. Ascenso y caída de la economía argentina, 1880-2002 (Ed. Siglo XXI, 2004) and El ciclo de la ilusión y el desencanto. Un siglo de políticas económicas argentinas (rev. and enlarged ed., Ed. Emecé, 2007); with Pablo Fajgelbaum, ¿Por qué Argentina no fue Australia? Una hipótesis sobre un cambio de rumbo (Ed. Siglo XXI, 2006); and with Fernando Rocchi and Gastón Rossi, Desorden y Progreso, historia de las crisis económicas argentinas, 1875-1905 (Ed. Edhasa, 2008).

Currently, he is studying the structural transitions in the economy of Argentina between World War I and the Great Depression (1914-1930).
