Competition: Latin America & Caribbean
Universidad Diego Portales
Born in Louvain, Belgium, in 1974, Patrick Hamilton lives and works in Santiago, Chile. He received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the Unversidad de Chile, in Santiago.
In his work, Mr. Hamilton interweaves elements of design, art, and publicity, using resources that range from painting to urban intervention, photography, objects, and installations. He is most interested in analyzing the diffuse relationships that occur between publicity and violence, work and leisure, cosmetics and power, and how they correspond to certain processes of "cultural cosmetization" characteristic of societies of consumption in general, and of Chilean society in particular.
His work has been shown in various solo and group exhibitions, in the United States and abroad, at such venues as DKM Foundation in Duisburg, Germany; Santa Barbara Contemporary Art Forum (CAF) in California; Isola Art Center in Milan, Italy; the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, Korea; El Museo del Bario in New York City; the Associazione Prometeo per l’Arte Contemporanea in Lucca, Italy; Henie-Onstad Kunstsenter, in Oslo, Norway; and the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Santiago. He has also participated in numerous biennials: XIV Sao Paul, VIII and X Havana, II Pargue, II Mercosur, and the End of the World Biennial in Ushuaia, Argentina, among others.
Patrick Hamilton has won the FONDART Fellowship, awarded by the Ministry of Culture of Santiago, seven times, and has been an artist-in-residence in the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) in New York City.
He is represented by the Galleria Prometeo in Milan, and KBK Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City.
