Born July 3, 1901, at East Liverpool, Ohio. Education: The American Conservatory, Chicago, studied harmony with John Palmer, 1921, counterpoint, composition, orchestration with Adolf Weidig, 1922–29 (Juilliard Musical Foundation Scholarship, 1926–29); in New York, counterpoint and composition with Charles Louis Seeger, 1929–30; American Conservatory, Mus. M., 1927.
