Suzanne Lynn Marchand
Suzanne Marchand is LSU Systems Boyd (University) Professor of European Intellectual History at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. Marchand obtained her BA from UC Berkeley in 1984, and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1992. She served as assistant and then associate professor at Princeton University before moving to LSU in 1999. She is the author of Down from Olympus: Archaeology and Philhellenism in Germany, 1750-1870 (Princeton UP, 1996), German Orientalism in the Age of Empire: Race, Religion, and Scholarship (Cambridge UP, 2009), and Porcelain: A History from the Heart of Europe (Princeton UP, 2020); the latter two books were awarded the George Mosse Prize of the American Historical Association and the Ralph Gomory Prize of the Business History Conference, respectively. Between 2012 and 2014 she served as President of the German Studies Association; in 2016, she began a three-year term as councilor for the Professional Division on the AHA Council. In 2017, she helped found LSU’s Center for Collaborative Knowledge. She sits on a number of editorial boards and has received fellowships from the SSRC, ACLS, Wissenschaftskolleg, Berlin, the Max Planck Institut für Wissenschaftgeschichte (also Berlin), Harvard’s Villa I Tatti (Florence), and Princeton’s Humanities Center.
