Suzanne Stewart-Steinberg

Suzanne Stewart-Steinberg is Professor of Comparative Literature and Italian Studies, Affiliated Professor of Modern Culture and Media, and Director of the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women at Brown University. Before arriving at Brown in 2005, she taught at Cornell University. She was raised in Germany and Italy, after which she completed her undergraduate work in Sociology at the University of Essex, UK. She earned her Ph.D in Political Science from Yale University and an additional MA in German Studies from Cornell University. Professor Stewart-Steinberg is the author of Sublime Surrender: Male Masochism at the Fin-de-Siècle [Cornell University Press, 1998]; The Pinocchio Effect: On Making Italians (1860-1920) [University of Chicago Press, 2007], Italian translation: L’effetto Pinocchio, Italia1861-1922: La costruzione di una complessa modernità [Rome: Elliot Edizioni, 2011], winner of the Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Publication Award for Best Manuscript in Italian Literary Studies; Impious Fidelity: Anna Freud, Psychoanalysis, and Politics [Cornell University Press, 2012]. Professor Stewart-Steinberg’s new project, which she will work on as a Guggenheim fellow, is entitled Grounds for Reclamation: Italian Fascism, Post-Fascism and the Making of Consent.
