Fellow: Awarded 2024
Field of Study: Engineering

Competition: US & Canada

Vivek Goyal is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Boston University. After studying at the University of Iowa and UC-Berkeley, he was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Laboratories, a Senior Research Engineer for Digital Fountain, and the Esther and Harold E. Edgerton Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT. Through 3dim Tech, winner of the 2013 MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition Launch Contest Grand Prize, he was subsequently with Google/Alphabet. Vivek is passionate about using mathematical modeling and analysis to understand the world and guide the invention of new technologies. His contributions to education include coauthoring Foundations of Signal Processing (Cambridge University Press, 2014) and several tutorial reviews. His work in computational imaging emphasizes physical and probabilistic modeling that enables the extraction of information from weak or indirect measurements, leading to methods such as first-photon imaging for photon-efficient lidar and computational periscopy for non-line-of-sight imaging. He recently turned his attention to secondary electron microscopy. His honors from the IEEE Signal Processing Society include paper awards (2002, 2014, 2017, 2019, 2020), Distinguished Lecturer (2017-2018), and Outstanding Editorial Board Member (2021). He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, IEEE, and Optica.
