Willem Jacob Luyten

Luyten, Willem Jacob: Appointed to take a large number of photographs of the southern sky, with the Bruce telescope of the Harvard Observatory, at Mazelspoort, South Africa, with a view to comparing these plates with similar plates taken between 1896 and 1905 to obtain information concerning the number, velocities and intrinsic brightnesses of the stars in the neighborhood of the sun; tenure, twelve months from July 1, 1928.

Born March 7, 1899, at Semarang, Netherlands East Indies. Education: University of the City of Amsterdam, Holland, A.B., 1918; University of Leiden, Ph.D., 1921. Fellow in the Lick Observatory, University of California, 1921–1922; Martin Kellogg Fellow, ibid., 1922; Astronomer, Harvard College Observatory, 1922–1927; Assistant Professor of Astronomy, 1927—, Harvard University.

Member of the Lick Observatory Eclipse Expedition to Ensenada, Lower California, 1923, and of the Hamburg Observatory Eclipse Expedition to Jokkomokk, Sweden, 1927.
