Poets Laureate

Each year, the Poet Laureate is selected by the Librarian of Congress in consultation with the current Laureate, past appointees, and poetry critics. Their duties include an annual lecture and poetry reading, introducing other poets in the Library’s annual poetry series, and raising Americans’ awareness of and appreciation for poetry. Some particularly notable Fellows in this position include Joseph Brodsky, Gwendolyn Brooks, Rita Dove, and Robert Hass.
