During the 1950s I received a B.A. in Foreign Languages (German and French) at Mississippi College in Clinton, Mississippi, and studied sociology privately at Tougaloo College, a traditionally black college, in Richland, Mississippi. From 1957-59 I was a Fulbright Scholar at the Gutenberg Universität in Mainz, in 1959 I attended the Deutsche Sommerschule at Middlebury
